Throw Down, Part II: Emily Hughes vs. Michelle Kwan

The U.S. skating commitee met last week and decided to give Michelle Kwan a spot on the Turino figure skating team. And Emily Hughes is pissed.

Emily, the little sister of 2002 Gold Medalist Sarah Hughes, won third place at last week's National Figure Skating Championships, a feat that should have given her a spot in the Olympics. But Michelle got a medical excuse and Emily got the curb.

Emily's apparently "not allowed" to talk about the situation--you'd think she as skating for the U.S.S.R.--but last Friday on The Today Show she did say this: "Well, I've feel like I've been working really hard and I'm looking forward to the next competition and representing the United States at Worlds." When Katie Couric asked if she thought Kwan's freebie was unfair, Emily said, "Maybe I'll see you in Turino, who knows?"

I don't know about you, but that "who knows?" sounds pretty fucking suspicious to me. In fact, it sounds like something Tanya Harding probably said when someone asked her if she thought Nancy Kerrigan was going to give a good performance that night she got popped in the kneecap. "Um, yeah, who knows?"

Exactly! Emily Hughes sucks. My guess is that they let her on the Today Show in the hopes that she might talk shit about Michelle Kwan.

It's hard to believe that Michelle Kwan is still a sentimental favorite. I mean I like her and would like to see her win, but let's face it, that's not gonna happen. Instead, we're going to have to watch her go out and choke again and it's going to be painful and embarassing for everyone. I think she needs to step aside and give Sasha the spotlight.

Before the last olympics, Kwan fired her coaches, made her boyfriend her trainer, and told everyone she knew how to train herself. Then she choked and took bronze. This arrogant skater does not deserve to be in the olympics and she doesnt deserve our admiration
